Fitness Businesses Need to Act Quickly

Posted by on November 19, 2020 at 12:42 pm

We recently learned (despite much effort on our part) that fitness facilities in Washington state must close again. I know that many fitness facilities across the country are facing similar shut downs. We are extremely disappointed, but we have to work with what we have and move forward.

I gave these words of encouragement and some action steps to our team:

The only thing we can control is what we control.

Someone told me to think like we are in a boat. We can’t control the weather, the wind, conditions…we can just control what we do with it all.

What is Your Differentiator?

Posted by on October 30, 2020 at 9:39 am

Covid 19 has forced us, here at Northwest Personal Training, to rethink and revamp the way we do things. However, even before the pandemic hit, we recognized that our Group Training program shouldn’t be our main focus. Our differentiator is Private Training. There are many business in the fitness industry who do a great job with group training. Businesses such as Orange Theory, Barre, Soul Cycle/Star Cycle and CrossFit are becoming more and more popular.

We know that we shouldn’t be trying to compete with these types of group training options, so we doubled down on marketing our bread and butter….Private Training.

We are known, in our community, as the experts when it comes to Private, Personalized, By Appointment, One-on-one Fitness & Strength Training with World-Class Trainers. Prior to March, we started focusing all of our marketing efforts on Private Training, and now (7 months into the pandemic) we have found that people feel safer in a one-on-one setting where we can more easily control access, flow, disinfecting, distancing etc.

Navigating The Face Mask Question At Your Fitness Facility

Posted by on August 4, 2020 at 10:26 am

Restrictions, messaging and compliance surrounding face masks has been less than consistent across the country. Some fitness facilities don’t require a mask at all, some only when you are checking in and out or when you are in common areas and can’t maintain 6 feet distance, and others require them at all times, even during exercise.

As a fitness business owner I have been doing my best to keep up with the regulations and recommendations in our state and what other fitness organizations are doing across the country. This topic is ever changing and evolving, as most things are currently in our world! Because of this, we have had to remain willing to adapt and change our policies.

I recently wrote a blog post about whether or not clients should wear face masks while exercising. I cover the possible effects of wearing a face mask while exercising and some of the face mask options that may be best for exercise.

Currently, in the state of Washington, we are allowed to remove our masks during exercise as long as we can maintain 6 feet distance from others.

Recommendations and regulations continue to evolve and I am in regular communication with our Governor’s office to assure we have all the up-to-date current information and can better navigate how we answer the “mask” question with our clients.

As it is with all fitness business owners and managers….the health and safety of our clients and staff is my top priority. Since there has been more and more emphasis put on wearing masks, but many have a hard time tolerating wearing cloth face masks during exercise, I decided to go to the source and ask our governor’s office their recommendation for Face Shields (plastic shields) and whether they would be appropriate usage for our clients and team members and here was the response we received.

Should Clients Wear Masks While Exercising?

Posted by on July 2, 2020 at 9:53 am

Many governors across the country have mandated masks to be worn in all indoor, public locations to help stop the spread of Covid-19. That leads many of us to ask whether or not there are any safety risks associated with exercising with a mask on.

As fitness professionals we should have a response ready when our clients ask this question, but what should we tell them?

Since many academic institutions are currently closed, large scale experiments are not feasible to effectively test usage of various types of masks during exercise and how it affects the user. It is also very difficult to effectively test and examine the spread of Covid-19 in the current conditions and control for all variables. As a result, the information and guidelines being released seem to change daily as we learn more about the virus. Try to be patient (and ask your clients to be patient) with the inconsistencies in guidelines – the world has only been studying this strain for 6 months!

Do You Have a Re-Opening Protocol?

Posted by on June 17, 2020 at 3:11 pm

Gyms and Fitness Facilities are re-opening all around the country and the world. Here at Northwest Personal Training we have planning for and anxiously waiting for this day to come! We were able to officially opened on Monday June 8th.

We knew we would need to take the appropriate measures to ensure that our studio was safe, clean and inviting for those of our clients who are ready to come back. We created a COVID-19 re-opening protocol that we have shared with our staff, clients and potential new clients.

Our protocol reminds our clients that….. “the health and fitness of our clients and staff is our top priority. As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 developments, we are constantly monitoring the updates to assure we are taking steps to keep everyone healthy.”

6 Ways to Keep Clients Motivated

Posted by on May 11, 2020 at 3:58 pm

Gyms, yoga studios and pools are closed or slowly reopening. Running and Triathlon races cancelled. It is easy to understand why clients may start to lose their motivation to workout.

As fitness professionals, we all know that the key to maintaining a commitment is to remember the ‘WHY’. Ask your clients …Why do you work out? Why do you race? Remind them that when they dig deep into their motivation, they’ll find that COVID-19 should not affect their ability to stay the course, they may just need to use a different mode of ‘transportation’.

We shared these 6 ways to stay motivated with our clients. Share them with your clients as well.

Let’s keep clients healthy and strong and keep our fitness businesses afloat!

1. Goals

It’s important to remember that the virus has not cancelled your goals. Ask yourself why you exercise, train and race? Most likely you do it to improve your physical strength and endurance, mental health, weight management, stress release and to boost your immune system. Aren’t all of those things still important, and even more so now?

Virtually Track Client Results

Posted by on April 30, 2020 at 8:48 am

During this time where most of us are conducting virtual training sessions….tracking client results can be challenging. We encourage our clients to track their results in other ways than just looking at the numbers on the scale. Some ways for clients to track results at home is to regularly measure the major areas of the body, take before and after pictures, weigh themselves (but only once per week) and use a body fat scale (if available).

Here is a video that I put together before social distancing and COVID-19. The video gives detailed instructions on how to measure major areas of the body etc. Go ahead and share this with your clients!
